As the Hollywood stars make their way to the red carpet decked out in glamorous dresses, tuxedos and diamonds that cost more than the average person’s car, we watch as they are praised once more at the Academy Awards, the most prestigious awards show in the business. Movie buffs can take part in watching, celebrating and making fun of Natalie Portman’s dress on Sunday, Feb. 27, at several local theaters and film centers hosting viewing parties.
From 4-8:30pm, the 142 Throckmorton Theatre in Mill Valley presents its viewing party as a benefit for the Breast Cancer Foundation and Harbor Point Charitable Foundation. Sonoma International Film Society hosts its party at Estate Restaurant in Sonoma beginning with a red carpet welcome at 3:30pm and culminating in a four-screen viewing (one screen is in the “silent room,” for those who want to get away from the incessant mocking of dresses). The doors will open at the Lark Theatre‘s Oscar Party at 4pm in Larkspur, benefiting the theater. Emcee Chad Carvey knows a thing or two about Hollywood—his uncle’s Dana Carvey!—and there’ll be food and wine from Emporio Rulli, Jessie et Laurent, Melting Pot, Red Robin, Rustic Bakery and more. Finally, in Napa, Mondavi Winery hosts a viewing party to raise funds for HIV-AIDS and Cancer Case Management Programs from 5pm to 11pm. Don’t want to get gussied up? There’s always the option of watching the Oscars unfold on the comfort of your own couch in a T-shirt and sweat pants, drinking a nice cold beer. The show starts at 5pm.
