Ahmed Salah at SSU; Russian River Health Center Open House

Last year’s Arab Spring uprising marked the beginning of tumult, transformation—and hope. On March 22, Sonoma State University’s Model United Nations Delegation welcomes Egyptian activist Ahmed Salah, a key planner in the 2011 protests at Tahrir Square. On a United States speaking tour, Salah will be joined by fiancée Mahitab Elgilani, who was also active in the protests that shook the Middle East and the world. The two organizers discuss evolving strategies in the struggle for a democratic society in Egypt, as well as Salah’s assertion that another crackdown and round of arrests by the Egyptian military looms in the near future. They appear together on Thursday, March 22, in the Commons at SSU. 1801 E. Cotati Ave., Rohnert Park. 7pm. Free. 707.774.2589.

Although health centers serve society’s neediest—the uninsured, the homeless, young children whose parents cannot afford insurance—they’re quite often one of the first items on the chopping block of government budget cuts. Thankfully, residents have the chance to honor the services of a local community health clinic when the Russian River Health Center hosts an open house this week. Part of the West County Health Centers consortium, in 2010 the clinic handled 10,034 patient visits for conditions including asthma, diabetes, HIV/AIDS, heart disease, substance abuse and depression. The event includes speakers from West County Health Centers administrative staff and a tour of the dental building. Celebrate community health options on Friday, March 23, at the Russian River Health Center. 16319 Third St., Guerneville. 5–7pm. Free. 707.869.5977.—Leilani Clark
