Gallery Talk Spanish Treasures From the Pacific World Trade

When: Sat., May 11, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. 2019

The promise of Columbus to return with riches from Asia to Europe by sailing across the Atlantic Ocean was interrupted by the American continents. However in 1565, the Spanish made that west-bound trade functional: by sailing across the Atlantic, traveling on land across Panama, then sailing across the Pacific. Those voyages, which ran for 250 years, first reached our local shores in 1579, 1595 and 1603. Learn about this exciting period of history, the artifacts and exhibit items, and some of the amazing stories of these seamen. Mike Von der Porten has been part of the Drake research since age
