Mill Valley Philharmonic presents: East meets West at the 1889 Paris World's Fair

When: Sun., March 12, 2-4 p.m. 2017

In 1889, in Paris, the City of Light, the world came to Paris and Paris became the world, from China to the Americas, from Congo to Russia. French composers Debussy and Ravel encountered Gamelan music for the first time and were profoundly inspired and influenced by this music of bells, gongs and drums. MVP’s program explores the influence of Javanese Gamelan music on Western composers Claude Debussy, Maurice Ravel, Béla Bartók and Lou Harrison. MVP welcomes Gamelan Sekar Jaya’s Bamboo Tingklik Ensemble in performance at all three concerts.

Price: All concerts are free. Walk-in seating.
